On Friday, April 23, Natasha McShane and Stacy Jurich, were brutally attacked in the Bucktown neighborhood. This is a horrible incident that has deeply shaken our community and we are doing everything we can to help the victims and bring the offender of this horrific crime to justice. Our prayers and thoughts are with Natasha McShane and Stacy Jurich, and their family and friends.

Since then, a man and woman have been charged in the violent assault.

This week, together with the Police Department, local businesses and neighbors, we canvassed the area and also handed out flyers asking for assistance with the assault on the women. I strongly encourage you to inform your family and friends of this incident, while advising them to take steps to protect themselves if they are staying out late. We will be informing as many passersby as possible again this week and we are trying to get the word out to visitors and residents in the area. The Police Department has also increased the number of patrols in the area.

Again, if you have any information that may be helpful to solving this crime, please call Area 5 Police Detectives at 312-746-8282.

Assistance For the Victims:
The Urban Planning and Policy Student Association at UIC is assisting the families with finances and has set up a webpage for voluntary contributions at www.uppsa.org.

Safety Tips for Neighbors:

  • If you see suspicious activity or persons, please call 911.
  • Know who your neighbors are. Take a walk down your block to introduce yourself, if you have not already done so.
  • Walk, ride or jog with a partner. Avoid dark, isolated places and DO NOT WALK ALONE late at night.
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings. DO NOT USE ANY HEADPHONES or DEVICES that decrease your ability to hear. Limit your need to carry bags, purses or parcels.
  • Have house and car keys ready for use. Carry a personal safety alarm.

Business Owners are encouraged to attend all Bucktown Wicker Park business safety seminars we host with the 14th District Police and the Chamber of Commerce.
