There have been street robberies of senior citizens in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood over the past few weeks. Inresponse, Alderman Waguespack, Alderman Moreno, and various representatives of the Ukrainian Village neighborhood meet at the Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal Credit Union’s offices on November 3rd. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the problem and develop some strategies designed to curtail this illegal activity against seniors.

13th District Police Commander Frank Gross indicated that they believe the robberies are the act of one criminal and that this person and that the District is actively working to apprehend the individual. The district is advising seniors in the area to take the following precautions:

  • Develop a mindset guiding by the principles of awareness and avoidance.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you and avoid dark unpopulated areas.
  • Call 911 to report suspicious persons or activity.
  • If confronted by an armed offender, comply with their demands and allow them to leave without confrontation.
  • Provide a detailed description of the offenders, including any information about their vehicles and license plate numbers.
