The newly formed Illinois Coalition Against Torture (ICAT) will be holding a panel discussion on U.S. sponsored torture at DePaul University on June 4th from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

One of the speakers at the event will be Darrell Cannon who was tortured under the watch of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge who is currently being tried for perjury.

The Illinois Coalition Against Torture (ICAT) provides education on the complex issues of U.S. sponsored torture so as to become a public witness against such torture. ICAT is focusing on three immediate projects at the current time:

• Advocating for Chicago Police survivors of torture by holding Chicago Police officers, including former Police Commander Jon Burge and other detectives under his command, accountable for their crimes of torture,

• Seeking new hearings for the torture survivors who remain wrongfully convicted and languishing in prison, and calling for financial reparations for torture survivors, advocating for the passage of local, state, and federal legislation criminalizing acts of torture committed by law enforcement officials in the United States, and

• Facilitating educational programs opposing U.S. sponsored torture both at home and abroad.
