Natasha McShane, an exchange student who was the victim of a brutal attack in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood in April, has returned to her native Northern Ireland for more surgery.

McShane appeared on the brink of death after she and friend Stacy Jurich were beaten with a baseball bat and robbed in April. She was in a medically induced coma for over a month, until part of her brain was removed and she woke up.

After a month of rehabilitation, she has begun to use her arms, speak, breathe without assistance, and has re-learned how to eat and drink, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. She walked again for the first time on June 16th.
