The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is reconstructing the Halsted Street bridge over the Chicago River North Branch canal. The new bridge will replace the existing movable bridge, built in 1909. The bridge hasn’t operated in more than 25 years, and a movable bridge is no longer needed.

The new, tied-arch bridge will feature two full lanes of traffic in each direction, up from the current one lane in each direction. The bridge will also feature marked bike lanes in each direction. This new configuration will improve traffic flow and safety for motoristsand bicyclists.
