The Bureau of Traffic Services tows illegally parked vehicles from the streets of Chicago and coordinates the towing of abandoned vehicles. The bureau also manages the City of Chicago’s auto pounds. It also provides services related to festivals, filming, crowd control and emergency management.

A vehicle can be classified as abandoned if it meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Is located on a public way in a state of disrepair as to be incapable of being driven in its present condition.
  • Has not been moved or used for more than seven consecutive days and is apparently deserted.
  • Has been left on the public way without state registration or a temporary state registration placard for two or more days.

Abandoned vehicles can be reported by contacting our office or submitting a service request on the city of Chicago website. Please be prepared to give the make, model, body style, color, and license plate.
